  1. Freetown was founded in 1787 by the British as a haven for freed
  2. slaves.  Their descendants, know as Creoles number more than
  3. 60,000.  A constitution was written in 1951 and full independence
  4. was achieved on April 19, 1971.  Political stability was
  5. established by a referendum on the acceptance of a one-party
  6. system of government in 1978.  The economy is plagued by
  7. inflation, corruption, and dependence on the International
  8. Monetary Fund and creditors.                    @
